Diagnostic Facial Muscle Emg
Diagnostic facial muscle EMG is a medical procedure that uses electrical activity to assess the functioning of some muscles in the face. It measures the level of electrical activity in the facial muscles while being activated.
A diagnostic facial muscle EMG may be used to diagnose a variety of conditions such as facial spasms, Bell’s palsy, trigeminal neuralgia and other cranial nerve disorders, movement disorders, and facial nerve paralysis.
A physician will place electrodes on certain muscles in the face, such as the forehead, eyes, and cheeks. These electrodes will detect electrical activity in the muscles. Then the doctor will stimulate the muscles with a tiny current of electricity. This will trigger electrical activity in the muscles, which will then be recorded and analyzed.
After the procedure, you may experience some tenderness, discomfort or redness around the electrodes. These should subside after a few hours. The results of the EMG will be given to your medical provider who will review them and create an individualized treatment plan based on the results.
